This analysis leads us to think in terms of a broader perspective of the term translation , which psychoanalysis and contemporary literary studies have addressed. Beckett had a literary project, which included a subversion of language that he aimed at through the process of self-translation. More than an activity, the process of translation and the manipulation of two languages is part of his poetic inspiration. When Huston makes an explicit homage to Beckett and puts herself in the same experience of writing in a foreign language and translating her own texts, she gives a testimony, and also provides a key for reading Beckett from a contemporary perspective. Despite the remarkable differences between these two authors, we claim that self-translation is part of their literary project, and is more than a random event for both of them. For a human being possessed of several native tongues and a sense of personal identity arrived at in the course of multilingual interior speech, the turn outward, the encounter of language with others and the world, would necessarily be very different, metaphysically, psychologically different, from that experienced by the user of a single mother tongue. I had the greatest pleasure reading this book and I think anybody who is into linguistics, translation and literary theory will respect the authors breadth of knowledge as well as his clear style. Coming from a mostly Chomskyan background I must admit that I find the attacks on Chomsky far too outdated and mostly irrelevant. On the other hand I accept that this book gave me a broader and deeper perspective on translation and subtle. For the long-awaited second edition, Steiner entirely revised the text, added new and expanded notes, and wrote a new preface setting the work in the present context of hermeneutics, poetics, and translation studies. With this provocative thesis he analyzes every aspect of translation from fundamental conditions of interpretation to the most intricate of linguistic constructions. Taking issue with the principal emphasis of modern linguistics, he finds the root of the "Babel problem" in our deep instinct for privacy and territory, noting that every people has in its language a unique body of shared secrecy.

Discussed by Christopher Norris The critical reception of After Babel, since its publication more than a year ago, provides another chapter in the history of closedshop academic attitudes which Steiner sets out to challenge. The book has received remarkably little attention from the linguists, philosophers and cultural historians—the community, in short, of which Steiner himself is part and whose concerns he also deeply questions. One reason for this lack of attention is doubtless the academic narrowness which regards such mixing of disciplines as a kind of professional affront. Another is probably the feeling induced by Steiner's immoderate show of learning, the feeling that one man could not possibly have read so much, or could only have covered it by hunting selectively through footnotes and abstracts. Certainly Steiner is a great seeker-out of handy information, sometimes thrown off with a point-making neatness which omits a large background of argument.
To commend it to an ecumenical audience, especially to the theologians and communicators but also to the policy makers present and future, pre- supposes the conviction not only that this is an important and even fundamental book but also that the churches and the ecumenical movement need to take the question of lan- guage and culture far more seriously than they have tended to do in the past. It is only very recently that the World Council of Churches has turned its attention to ecu- menical language policy. The development of the Council from the largely western European, even Anglo-Saxon, body it was in into the worldwide multicultural constituency it is in poses afresh and urgently the problem of which vehicular languages it now needs in order to be an effective communications network serving the whole of its diverse linguistic membership. At the Nairobi Assembly an attempt will be made for the first time to observe and reflect on what really happens language-wise in an ecumenical meeting of this kind.
