The presence of interfacial impurities, mainly sulfur, has been reported to accelerate spallation, thereby promoting the high-temperature corrosion of metals and alloys. The precise mechanism for sulfur-induced destruction of oxides, however, is ambiguous. The objective of the present research is to elucidate the microscopic mechanism for the high-temperature corrosion of aluminum alloys in the presence of sulfur.

Corrosion fatigue tests were performed on three cast aluminium alloys in engine coolant using a revolving bending test apparatus. A decrease in the bearable load is detected for the tests under corrosive conditions compared to standard fatigue testing in air. The surface condition of the test specimens showed a remarkable influence, whereby specimens with a machined surface failed earlier than those with as-cast surface condition.

However, deep in the Black Sea, the alloys, which are susceptible to structural types of corrosion, were subjected to strong exfoliation corrosion, because hydrogen sulfide excluded fouling with microorganisms that inhibits exfoliation corrosion.
