Animal locomotion, in ethology , is any of a variety of methods that animals use to move from one place to another. There are also many animal species that depend on their environment for transportation, a type of mobility called passive locomotion , e. Animals move for a variety of reasons, such as to find food , a mate , a suitable microhabitat , or to escape predators. For many animals, the ability to move is essential for survival and, as a result, natural selection has shaped the locomotion methods and mechanisms used by moving organisms. For example, migratory animals that travel vast distances such as the Arctic tern typically have a locomotion mechanism that costs very little energy per unit distance, whereas non-migratory animals that must frequently move quickly to escape predators are likely to have energetically costly, but very fast, locomotion. The anatomical structures that animals use for movement, including cilia , legs , wings , arms , fins , or tails are sometimes referred to as locomotory organs [2] or locomotory structures.

How can geckoes walk on the ceiling and basilisk lizards run over water? What are the aerodynamic effects that enable small insects to fly? What are the relative merits of squids' jet-propelled swimming and fishes' tail-powered swimming? Why do horses change gait as they increase speed? What determines our own vertical leap?

Mattesi Synopsis: Many artists are unsure how to bridge the gap between the many basic 'how to draw' books and the more advanced ones dealing with the esoteric details of composition, perspective and anatomy. Force: Animal Drawing is the comprehensive guide to developing artistic animals that are creative, dynamic and anatomical, bridging the gap between foundational art and advanced techniques.

Human and Machine Locomotion pp Cite as. The human locomotive apparatus is fascinating in its versatility, sophistication and performance. Its main characteristic is versatility. The locomotive apparatus appears to be optimized for an enormous variety of activities, not just for a few specific ones. While many animals can outperform humans in specific situations, none can perform as well in a multitude of conditions. This has very important repercussions in the study of human locomotion. Given the complexity and flexibility of the human locomotive apparatus the characterization of all the possible kinds of human locomotion is a daunting task.

Life in motion

Modern Techniques in Neuroscience Research pp Cite as. Biomechanical analyses of human and animal movements are performed for two basic reasons. The first reason is to analyze the internal and external forces acting on the human or animal system, and to determine the effects of these forces on musculoskeletal tissues, such as tendons, ligaments, articular cartilage, muscle and bone. These studies are typically centered around one of two questions: 1 what is the normal response of musculoskeletal tissues to everyday loading conditions; and 2 what are the loading conditions that may produce acute failure ligament tears or breaking of bones or longterm, chronic tissue failure, for example, the slow and continuous breakdown of articular cartilage in osteoarthritis? This first set of investigations may be called the classic biomechanical investigations.
