George Gershwin was born in Brooklyn, New York, the second of four children from a close-knit Russian Jewish immigrant family. At the age of 16, the young George quit school and began his musical career as a song-plugger on New York's Tin Pan Alley. Soon after, however, he met a young lyricist named Irving Ceaser and together they would compose a long list of popular songs including "Swanee," which scored Gershwin his first big national hit. Musicals including "Oh Kay! Gershwin's jazz-influenced Rhapsody in Blue for piano and orchestra premiered in New York's Aeolian Hall at a concert entitled "An Experiment in Music" when the composer was still in his twenties.

George Gershwin greatly admired Alban Berg and his opera Wozzeck. Catfish Row , originally titled Suite from Porgy and Bess , is an orchestral work by George Gershwin based upon music from his famous opera Porgy and Bess. Gershwin completed the work in and it premiered at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia on January 21 of that year, with Alexander Smallens conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra. Gershwin played the piano part, including the piano solo in the opening moments. This piece preserves some of the darkest and most complex music Gershwin ever wrote.
