Add to GoodReads. Water, Peace, and War. Now in an updated edition, this pioneering and authoritative study considers the profound impact of the growing global water crunch on international peace and security as well as possible ways to mitigate the crisis. One sobering fact is that the retail price of bottled water is already higher than the international spot price of crude oil. But unlike oil, water has no substitute, raising the specter of water becoming the next flashpoint for conflict. Water war as a concept may not mesh with the conventional construct of warfare, especially for those who plan with tanks, combat planes, and attack submarines as weapons.
Peace is a concept of societal friendship and harmony in the absence of hostility and violence. In a social sense, peace is commonly used to mean a lack of conflict such as war and freedom from fear of violence between individuals or groups. Throughout history leaders have used peacemaking and diplomacy to establish a certain type of behavioral restraint that has resulted in the establishment of regional peace or economic growth through various forms of agreements or peace treaties. Such behavioral restraint has often resulted in the reduction of conflicts, greater economic interactivity, and consequently substantial prosperity. The Anglo-French term Pes itself comes from the Latin pax , meaning "peace, compact, agreement, treaty of peace, tranquility, absence of hostility, harmony.
From to , the Afghanistan Islamic Republic government, with support from international donor agencies, has worked to change the direction of education towards peace, free from political intervention and favouritism. The purpose of this research is to evaluate these different approaches to education by looking at a range of school textbooks from a peace education perspective. An existing description of three main objectives of peace education in the distinct areas of recognizing violence, resolving conflict non-violently and creating an environment for positive peace Standish led to a theoretical framework with which to analyse the school textbooks, using content analysis as the research method. Directive qualitative content analysis has been used as the methodology for this research. The textbooks that were developed during to under the Afghanistan Islamic Republic Government AIRG , on the other hand, has gone some way to meeting peace education objectives. The research analysis shows that school textbooks that were in use in schools from year contained less information relevant to peace education and had information that was clearly in favour of the ruling and influential political party and supported non-peaceful education and in some places war education. This research data analysis demonstrates that the Afghanistan Ministry of Education has made progress to educate students towards peace, but opportunities exist to further strengthen peace education content in the school textbook in the country.
Realism is most often depicted as a tradition or perspective on international relations explaining war and military conflict. This is not without reason as realists have focused on war as a major or even the primary mechanism of change in international relations. This position is echoed in realism up until today. Likewise, John Mearsheimer, in The Tragedy of Great Power Politics , argues that the most war-prone regions are those characterised by unbalanced multipolarity with a potential hegemon seeking to change the established order in its favour by military means, and that the growth of China constitutes the greatest danger to world peace Mearsheimer This does not mean that realists are unconcerned with peace.

Disciplines involved may include philosophy , political science , geography , economics , psychology , sociology , international relations , history , anthropology , religious studies , and gender studies , as well as a variety of others.
