This Handbook is specifically designed as a guide to highway engineers. It was used as a textbook for the FHWA training courses on the above title. Several methods of analysis and design of piles under lateral loading are in use. Two methods are presented: the method of Broms, and the method where nonlinear soil-response curves, p-y curves, are employed.

A drilled shaft, also known as drilled pier, drilled caisson, caisson, bored pile, etc. In its simplest form, a drilled shaft is constructed by making a cylindrical excavation, placing a reinforcing cage when necessary , and then concreting the excavation. With available drilling equipment, shaft diameters up to 20 ft 6 m and depths exceeding ft 76 m are possible. However, for most normal applications, diameters in the range of 3 to 10 ft 1 to 3 m are typical.

This paper proposes a method for the nonlinear analysis of laterally loaded single reinforced concrete piles based on the beam-on-nonlinear-Winkler-foundation approach. A nonlinear fiber beam-column element is used to model the nonlinear behavior of a pile. The pile is divided into a series of segments, of which the cross section is assumed to be plane and normal to the longitudinal axis. The internal force of a segment is derived by integrating the nonlinear stress-strain relationships of all steel and concrete fibers within the cross section of the segment. The substructure technique is introduced to calculate the stiffness matrix of the segments. The nonlinear behavior of soils surrounding the pile is characterized by a modified strain wedge model.
