Indian law is enforced by a number of agencies. Like many federal nations , the constitution of India delegates the maintenance of law and order primarily to the states and territories. At the federal level, some of India's paramilitary forces are part of the Ministry of Home Affairs and support the states.

The Mission of Uttarakhand Police is prevention and detection of crime, maintenance of law and order and efficient service delivery to citizens. In pursuance of our mission, we shall discharge our duties with a sense of service, impartiality and integrity. In addition to our statutory responsibilities, we will endeavour to efficiently assist in rescue and relief operations during disasters.

The law of India refers to the system of law across the Indian nation. India maintains a hybrid legal system with a mixture of civil , common law and customary , Islamic ethics , or religious law within the legal framework inherited from the colonial era and various legislation first introduced by the British are still in effect in modified forms today. Since the drafting of the Indian Constitution , Indian laws also adhere to the United Nations guidelines on human rights law and the environmental law. Indian personal law is fairly complex, with each religion adhering to its own specific laws. In most states, registering of marriages and divorces is not compulsory.
