Welding automation is a pathway to reducing costs in the energy sector and dependence on certified welders, who are in short supply. Automation is pursued for weld planning, execution, and defect detection. Bead and layer geometries are estimated using weld bead shape prediction that takes into account process parameters. After the first weld layer, subsequent trajectory plans are adapted to compensate for differences between the planned and actual weld surface. Sensor-based, closed-loop control of the process is being pursued to compensate for gravitational effects. Near-real-time defect detection provides the opportunity for immediate evaluation and correction, reducing costly repairs. Preliminary experimental results are presented.

Eligibility

To obtain a Class B Welder's Certificate, applicants must have one 1 year of experience in the welding trade or must complete an approved welder's course and must also pass a qualification test. To obtain an Approved Welder's Certificate, applicants must have one 1 year of experience in the welding trade, plus at least six 6 months of experience on pressure piping, or must complete an approved welder's course, and must also pass a qualification test. To obtain a Qualified Welder's Certificate, applicants must have two 2 years of experience in the welding trade with at least one 1 year of experience on pressure piping, and must also pass a qualification test. To obtain a Special Welder's Certificate, applicants must have two 2 years of experience in the welding trade with at least one 1 year of experience on pressure piping, and must also pass a qualification test. A Class B Welder's Certificate authorizes the holder to carry out the fabrication and repair of structures other than boilers, pressure vessels or pressure piping systems. An Approved Welder's Certificate authorizes the holder to carry out the fabrication and repair of boilers and pressure vessels and pressure piping systems having a maximum design pressure of psi. A Qualified Welder's Certificate authorizes the holder to fabricate and repair boilers and pressure vessels and pressure piping systems.

The purpose of this article is to briefly identify some of the special requirements applicable to the repair or alteration of pressure vessels fabricated of quenched and tempered UHT materials and, in particular, the additional rules that should be utilized when repairs or alterations are made to these items. The most frequent contact with these vessels as a repair organization or inspector is the repair or alteration of over-the-road liquid petroleum gas LPG transport vessels. The following paragraphs include a summary of areas to be considered when repairs or alterations to quenched and tempered materials are encountered. UHT requires all nozzle welds to be full-penetration design. There are also specific requirements for nozzle materials, geometry, and attachment details. In some cases additional drop weight tests may be required based on minimum design metal temperature.
