Evidence is mounting that EHRs are resulting in unintended consequences with patient safety implications. Clinical teams confront usability challenges that can present ethical issues requiring ethical decision-making models to support clinicians in appropriate action on behalf of safe, effective clinical care. The purpose of this article is to identify and address ethical issues raised by nurses in use of electronic health records. We provide a case scenario with application of the Four Component Model and describe a study of nurse experiences with the EHR. The nursing Code of Ethics, Nursing Scope and Standards, and Legal Implications are reviewed, and we conclude with recommendations and a call to action. Citation: McBride, S. Health Information Technology HIT implementation is intended to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of health care delivery by providing tools such as electronic health records EHRs , clinical decision support systems, e-prescribing within interoperable systems, and telehealth applications. Current efforts involve moving the mainly paper-based health records system to an electronic health records system. EHRs are intended to allow for comprehensive management of health information and its secure exchange between patients, health professionals and other entities that use health records through one nationwide interoperable system. Telepsychology is the provision of psychological services using telecommunication technologies. Depending on how the term is used, telepsychology or telehealth may be narrowly or widely defined to include a variety of telecommunication technologies such as telephone, mobile devices, interactive videoconferencing, email, chat, text and Internet e.

In all too many cases, EHRs seemed to create a huge amount of extra work and generate too few benefits. The pandemic has made the deficiencies of these systems glaringly apparent. This article discusses how EHRs should be transformed so they become an indispensable tool in keeping individual patients and patient populations healthy. The Covid pandemic presents the U. Paper medical records do not present these characteristics; they are usually official forms and charts found in one central location, limited to each institution housing its own set of records for each individual served by the organization. Breaches of paper records usually do not occur outside of or beyond the individual organization. The potential for breaches of electronic records is much greater due to their inherent vulnerability. The characteristics which make them so attractive ease of use, rapid transmission between providers, etc.
