Ubiquitous computing or " ubicomp " is a concept in software engineering and computer science where computing is made to appear anytime and everywhere. In contrast to desktop computing , ubiquitous computing can occur using any device, in any location, and in any format. A user interacts with the computer, which can exist in many different forms, including laptop computers , tablets and terminals in everyday objects such as a refrigerator or a pair of glasses. This paradigm is also described as pervasive computing , [1] ambient intelligence , [2] or "everyware". When primarily concerning the objects involved, it is also known as physical computing , the Internet of Things , haptic computing , [4] and "things that think".

Ubiquitous Computing (eBook, PDF)

Pervasive computing integrates computation into the environment, rather than having computers which are distinct objects. Computation is embedded into the environment and everyday objects and would enable people to interact with information-processing devices more naturally and casually than they currently do, and in ways that suit whatever location or context they find themselves in.
