The killing of Remus by his twin, along with other tales from their story, have inspired artists throughout the ages. Since ancient times, the image of the twins suckling a she-wolf has been a symbol of the city of Rome and the ancient Romans. Although the tale takes place before the founding of Rome around BC, the earliest known written account of the myth is from the late 3rd century BC. Possible historical basis for the story, as well as whether the twins' myth was an original part of Roman myth or a later development, is a subject of ongoing debate. Romulus and Remus were born in Alba Longa , one of the ancient Latin cities near the future site of Rome.

The story of Romulus and Remus

Many of Aeneas decedents reigned this settlement peacefully. When Nimitor was king, his brother Amulius seized the power and dethroned Nimitor, killing his male heirs and forcing his daughter, Rhea Silvia, to become a Vestal Virgin so that she would not provide a male heir to the throne. Nevertheless, Rhea Silvia gave birth to twins, Romulus and Remus, whose father was thought to be Mars, the god of War. Amulius imprisoned the daughter and condemned the babies to death by drowning in the river Tiber. However, the servant in charge of the task took pity on them and instead placed the twins into a basket and pushed them down the River Tiber. They were safely carried to the area of the seven hills. There, the boys were found by a she-wolf called Lupa who nursed them in her lair in Palatine Hill until they were found by a shepherd and his wife, who raised them as shepherds.

Over the next few weeks, we are going to be building up to writing an adventure story. This week we will start by looking at penguins and then move on to looking at describing a winter scene. To support you with Thursday's lesson on writing sentences about our winter scene, I have added the expanded noun phrases and some example sentences that the children in school have created. This week's spellings are shown below. Make sure you practise them regularly throughout the week and ask a grown-up to test you at the end of the week. Challenge: Write each word in a sentence to show you understand their meaning.

A legend is a story about a person who did something heroic. It is not based on fact nor can it be said to be the truth. Roman children were told the following legend about how the city of Rome was built. Romulus and Remus were twin brothers. Numitor's brother, Amulius, had taken the throne from him and had forced Rhea Silvia to become a vestal virgin so that she would not have any children who might try to take back the throne.

Various traditions attribute the establishment of many of Rome's oldest legal, political, religious, and social institutions to Romulus and his contemporaries. Although many of these traditions incorporate elements of folklore , and it is not clear to what extent a historical figure underlies the mythical Romulus, the events and institutions ascribed to him were central to the myths surrounding Rome's origins and cultural traditions. The myths concerning Romulus involve several distinct episodes and figures: the miraculous birth and youth of Romulus and Remus , his twin brother; Remus' murder and the founding of Rome; the Rape of the Sabine Women ; the war with the Sabines; Titus Tatius ; the establishment of Roman institutions; and the death or apotheosis of Romulus, and succession of Numa Pompilius. Romulus and his twin brother Remus were the sons of Rhea Silvia the daughter of Numitor , the former king of Alba Longa and the god Mars. Through her, the twins are descended from the Trojan hero Aeneas and Latinus , the mythical founder of the kingdom of Latium. Before the twins' birth, Numitor had been usurped by his brother, Amulius.

While it may never be certain if these twin brothers were real, what is certain is that their story was treated with respect and discussed at length even by the ancients. They invited the Sabines and Latins to a festival of Cronus at the Circus Maximus, and while the men of these cities were distracted, the Roman men carried off their women into Rome.
