Max Weber's The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism is a study of the relationship between the ethics of ascetic Protestantism and the emergence of the spirit of modern capitalism. Weber argues that the religious ideas of groups such as the Calvinists played a role in creating the capitalistic spirit. Weber first observes a correlation between being Protestant and being involved in business, and declares his intent to explore religion as a potential cause of the modern economic conditions.

Max Weber is perhaps best known of his work on the Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism. His views have been much debated but the key idea in Weber was that there was a link between the rise of capitalism and an ethos of self control associated with Protestant reformation. By stressing the cultural, rather than the economic, dimension Weber has often been seen as anti Marxist camp but things are more complicated than that, Weber was choosing to focus on the cultures we create rather than dismissing structural and other issues see Giddens below if you want to carry this further. Weber is also much known for his later work on authority. Put briefly he identified three types of authority: rational rule based ; traditional and charismatic. All three were ideal types — or generalisations.

This article tries to explore the fundamental values of Confucianism ethics and its influence to the emergence of Capitalism. By using Weber's thesis on the relationship between Protestant ethics and the spirit of capitalism, this paper concludes that the three important values of Confucianism Ethics ren: benevolence, humaneness, li: rightness, righteousness, and fittingness, and yi: rules of proper conduct, ritual, and rites are proposing people on how to become good human beings. Although it is not guaranteed but the Confucianism ethics are still relevant to be practiced in contemporary situation. Some research findings recently showed that Confucianism ethics have really influence people to fulfill the "calling" Weber's term and it has also power to increase the spirit of capitalism. The rise of Japan, China, and the four little dragons including South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore is related to the development of Confucianism, and it directly brings down Weber's view point, which taught that Confucianism did not have the spirit of capitalism. Weber describes the capitalist spirit as the desire to constantly work and build greater and greater wealth, even when that wealth is not needed. He notes that that the capitalist spirit is not the same as capitalism itself, since it may exist in non-capitalist economies, and people not driven by endless profits may live within capitalist economies. In the capitalist spirit, one lives to work.
