Modern rhetoric has undergone many changes since the days of Ancient Rome and Greece to fit the social demands of the time. Kenneth Burke, who is largely credited with defining the notion of modern rhetoric, described modern rhetoric as, "rooted in an essential function of language itself, a function that is completely realistic and is continually born anew, using language as a symbolic means of inducing cooperation in beings that by nature respond to symbols. The intervention outside of an academic movements such as structuralism, semiotics, and critical theory has made a significant contribution to the modern understanding of rhetorical studies.
